Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation Society (ABCS)

Origin
The ABCS can trace its origins back to the 24th April 2006, when the society was formally launched at ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR), Lucknow in the presence of Dr. S. Ayappan, then DDG (Fy.), ICAR. It was the result of aspirations and dedications of the professionals at ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow. The ABCS was duly registered under the Societies registration Act, 1860 on 24.08.2006 at Lucknow, with the Regd. No. 1192/2006-07.
Purpose
There has been a long felt need to create an appropriate platform to bring under focus all the knowledge available till date and that would be forthcoming in future. The aim is to debate, disseminate and facilitate the conservation measures to protect aquatic biodiversity.
Objectives
1. To create awareness among general public about aquatic biodiversity and the need for its conservation.
2. To undertake the activities to foster sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems and associated living resources
3. To emphasize the importance of judicious use of aquatic genetic resources.
4. To promote research, education and sustainable development of aquatic genetic resources this would result in the more profitable utilization.
Type of members
Stakeholders including researchers, academicians, students, entrepreneur and farmers involved in aquatic genetic resources and conservation can be a member of this society. Presently, there are 259 life members in the society. As the society is housed at ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, the Director, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow is the ex-officio President of this society. Other posts in the executive council of the society generally elected based on the consent of GB. The society organizes international, national conferences, symposia, meetings, awareness programmes to provide the platform for deliberation related to aquatic genetic resources management and conservation. Some of the important events organized by the society were Indian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum, International Symposium on Aquatic Animal Health and Epidemiology for Sustainable Asian Aquaculture, One Health and Ecosystem Services and the 3rd International conference on Aquatic Animal Epidemiology (AquEpi III). The society also celebrates different important days earmarked by Government of India for safeguarding our native aquatic genetic resources.
