It is a freshwater food fish of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. In India, the fish is distributed in large number of states. The fish is commonly known as 'bata' and is considered highly delicious particularly in eastern parts of the country. It has been known to grow to a size of 61 cm. A slow moving fish in nature and feeds on algae and tiny fishes. Ponds, rivulets, rivers are the main habitats. Matures in one year. Captive breeding has been attained. Sexes are distinct during breeding season. Breeds once during monsoon and lay large number of semi-buoyant eggs. The fish is cultured at many places in eastern part of the country in polyculture system.
